Shares of life insurance providers and affiliated financial institutions suffered a sharp downturn during Thursday’s intra-day trading on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), falling by up to 20 per cent. The market-wide sell-off affected life insurance companies, bancassurance-linked commercial banks, and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs). The sudden decline was triggered by stricter operational expense limits and commission ceilings proposed by the sector regulator.
Digital distribution platform PB Fintech, the parent entity of Policybazaar, experienced the most severe contraction, with its share price hitting the 20 per cent lower circuit limit at ₹1,509. Newly listed Turtlemint Fintech Solutions similarly dropped 20 per cent to ₹109.10, marking its lowest trading level since its stock market listing in June 2026. Other major financial holdings also recorded steep losses; Max Financial Services, Canara HSBC Life Insurance Company, and L&T Finance saw their valuations decline by up to 12 per cent during early trading hours.
The broader market reflected this anxiety across the financial sector. Shares in ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, HDFC Life Insurance, Cholamandalam Investment and Finance, Info Edge (India), Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, and Bajaj Finserv slid between 3 per cent and 8 per cent. The benchmark BSE Sensex index traded down 0.73 per cent at 74,284 by 9:30 AM, dragged lower by the sharp losses in insurance-linked equities.
The catalyst behind this intense selling pressure was a consultation paper released on Wednesday by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai). The regulatory body proposed a phased reduction in the Expenses of Management (EoM) permitted for insurance providers. Under these recommendations, life insurers must bring company-level operational expenses down to 15 per cent of gross direct premium income (GDPI) within two years, with a further reduction to 12.5 per cent mandated within five years.
Irdai’s proposals also feature product-specific and channel-specific commission caps designed to restructure distribution expenses across the industry. Because banks, NBFCs, and online aggregators generate substantial distribution fees from selling insurance policies, investors anticipate a direct squeeze on profit margins for underwriters and their intermediary partners alike.
