Insurers Clear Tk63.91 Crore in Claims for 16,058 Customers

The Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) has continued its efforts to settle legitimate insurance claims that have remained unpaid for extended periods, with another round of payments bringing relief to thousands of policyholders.

In the third phase of the initiative, 7,641 policyholders received insurance claim payments totalling Tk26.36 crore. With this latest disbursement, the regulator said a total of Tk63.91 crore has now been paid to 16,058 policyholders across three phases.

The latest round of claim settlements was completed on 4 October under the supervision of IDRA. Payments were made from the head offices of the relevant insurance companies, with the regulatory authority overseeing the process to ensure that eligible policyholders received their outstanding dues.

According to IDRA, the initiative is aimed not only at clearing long-standing claims but also at strengthening governance, transparency and accountability in the insurance sector. The regulator has been seeking ways to address legitimate claims that have remained unsettled, particularly where insurers have faced financial difficulties.

The Tk26.36 crore paid in the third phase was raised through the encashment of assets and security bonds held by the relevant insurance companies. Such measures are significant for policyholders of financially distressed insurers, as prolonged delays in claim settlement can undermine confidence in insurance providers and discourage people from relying on insurance as a form of financial protection.

The first phase involved payments of Tk14.51 crore to 2,549 life insurance policyholders. In the second phase, 5,868 policyholders received Tk23.03 crore. The third phase then covered another 7,641 policyholders with payments amounting to Tk26.36 crore.

Taken together, the three phases have provided financial relief to 16,058 customers and brought a substantial portion of long-standing legitimate claims closer to resolution. The scale of the third phase also indicates that a larger number of policyholders have been included as the process has progressed.

Despite this progress, the wider problem of unpaid insurance claims remains considerable. Recent information indicates that around Tk700 crore in insurance claims are still outstanding in Bangladesh. These claims may involve different circumstances, including cases requiring verification or those affected by legal and other complications. Determining which claims are valid and resolving them through appropriate procedures remains a major challenge for the regulator.

Timely claim settlement is central to maintaining public confidence in the insurance industry. Customers generally pay premiums over a long period with the expectation that the insurer will provide financial support when the terms of the policy are met. If legitimate claims remain unpaid for years, dissatisfaction can extend beyond individual customers and affect perceptions of the wider sector.

For this reason, clearing existing arrears is only one part of the task. Insurance companies also need stronger financial capacity and more efficient internal processes so that new claims do not accumulate over prolonged periods. Effective regulatory oversight is equally important to ensure that legitimate claims are assessed and settled within a reasonable timeframe.

IDRA has said that the verification and settlement of other outstanding legitimate claims will continue. Where necessary, the regulator plans to use insurers’ assets and other available financial resources to facilitate payments to policyholders.

The settlement of Tk63.91 crore in claims across three phases represents a significant step towards addressing the sector’s accumulated obligations. Yet with around Tk700 crore still reportedly outstanding, the speed and effectiveness with which the remaining legitimate claims are resolved will be a key test for both the regulator and the insurance companies involved.
