Dhaka University Hosts Bancassurance Capacity Workshop

A two-day intensive workshop on bancassurance has been held at the University of Dhaka, bringing together academics, regulators, and industry practitioners to strengthen collaboration between the banking and insurance sectors in Bangladesh. The programme, titled “Bancassurance in Bangladesh: Regulatory, Operational & Sales Readiness”, aimed to enhance professional capacity, improve customer-focused insurance delivery, and support the expansion of integrated financial services.

The workshop was jointly organised by the Master of Professional Banking (MPB) programme under the Department of Banking and Insurance at the university’s Faculty of Business Studies, in partnership with Bankers Club of Bangladesh Limited. It took place from 10 to 11 July at the Professor Dr. Abdullah Farouk Multipurpose Hall, located on the ninth floor of the faculty building.

The inaugural session, held on Friday afternoon, was attended by Professor Dr. Mahmood Osman Imam, Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies, as Chief Guest. Professor Dr. Shahidul Islam Zahid, Chairman of the Department of Banking and Insurance, joined as Special Guest, while Professor Dr. Md. Main Uddin attended as Guest of Honour. Among others present were Md. Rashed Akter, President of Bankers Club of Bangladesh Limited, Professor Dr. Abdullah Al Mahmud, Coordinator of the MPB programme, and Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman (Aryan), Learning Development Secretary of the club.

Speakers emphasised the growing relevance of bancassurance as a mechanism for advancing financial inclusion. By leveraging the extensive reach of banking networks, insurance products can be delivered more efficiently to a wider segment of the population. This model, they noted, also helps ensure that customers receive reliable, accessible, and need-based insurance solutions.

The workshop featured eight specialised sessions over two days. Discussions on the first day centred on the current landscape of bancassurance in Bangladesh, including regulatory frameworks set by the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority and Bangladesh Bank. Participants also examined partnership structures between banks and insurers, as well as strategies for aligning insurance products with diverse customer segments.

On the second day, the focus shifted to operational and technical readiness. Key topics included technology integration between banks and insurers, compliance with know-your-customer and anti-money laundering requirements, premium collection systems, claims management processes, and risk control mechanisms. Sessions also addressed consumer protection, prevention of mis-selling, salesforce preparedness, and the development of measurable performance indicators to support sustainable growth.

The workshop was facilitated by faculty members of the University of Dhaka, senior officials from Bangladesh Bank, and experienced professionals from leading financial institutions. The resource persons included Professor Dr. Md. Main Uddin, Mohammad Ashfaqur Rahman, S. M. Ibrahim Hossain, Shubasish Barua, Mohammad Mahbub Hossain, Professor Dr. Hasina Sheykh, Md. Rashed Akter, and Subir Kumar Kundu.

In addition to expert-led sessions, participants engaged in case studies based on the Bangladesh context, group discussions, role-play exercises, and team presentations. Practical tools such as a Bancassurance Launch Checklist, KPI dashboard, and Product Suitability Matrix were also provided to support real-world application.

According to the organisers, certificates will be awarded to successful participants on 17 July 2026, marking the conclusion of the training initiative.
