What’s Happening?
Australia’s general insurance industry has recorded its highest return on equity (ROE) in ten years for the 2025 financial year (FY25), according to the latest Optima Report from actuarial consultancy Finity. The sector achieved an impressive 19% ROE, up six percentage points from the previous year. This strong performance is attributed to favourable weather conditions, solid investment gains, and the continued impact of premium increases.
The Optima Report provides an independent analysis of the general insurance market, drawing on economic trends and sector performance. Pravesh Ponna, Principal at Finity and lead author of the report, noted that the sector’s strong results come at a time of increasing financial stress. “Businesses are scaling back, households are feeling the pinch, and economic confidence is waning,” Ponna said. “The industry’s results highlight both the resilience of insurers and the mounting challenges in Australia’s risk landscape.”
What Does This Mean?
For the Insurance Sector: Strong Performance Amidst Economic Uncertainty
Despite the broader economic pressures, the Australian general insurance sector has managed to post impressive financial results. Key indicators for FY25 include:
- Gross Written Premium (GWP) Growth: The sector saw a 6% growth in GWP, a slowdown from the double-digit increases of recent years, as inflationary pressures eased.
- Net Combined Operating Ratio: A net combined operating ratio of 93% marked a three-point improvement over FY24, placing the result among the best in recent years.
- Investment Returns: Investment returns reached 6.5%, marking the second consecutive year of record performance.
- Reinsurance Expenditure: Reduced reinsurance costs, with cession rates falling for the second year in a row as market conditions stabilised.
These indicators suggest a healthy, resilient industry, though one that must continue to adapt to shifting economic conditions.
Why Does This Matter?
For the Australian Economy: Resilience in the Face of Challenges
Ponna’s comments highlight a key point: the general insurance sector’s strong financial performance is not just a reflection of internal industry health but also a response to the broader economic environment. While many businesses and households face increased financial pressure, the insurance sector has shown considerable resilience, benefiting from factors like improved investment returns and more stable reinsurance markets.
The findings also demonstrate the ongoing impact of premium increases, which continue to flow through the industry. Although the pace of GWP growth has slowed from prior years, the stability of these premiums has contributed to the sector’s strong results.
The Bigger Picture: A Bright Outlook for Australian Insurers
The report underscores that Australian general insurers are navigating a complex landscape of financial stress, rising costs, and economic uncertainty while still achieving remarkable profitability. With continued premium growth, a stabilising reinsurance market, and solid investment returns, the sector is well-positioned to maintain its strong performance in the coming years.
For policyholders and insurers alike, the data points to a future where, despite external pressures, the industry remains a stable and resilient part of Australia’s economic fabric.
